TWO HOUSES

Ventnor | Millowl / Phillip Island | Bunurong Country

This project comprises two houses sharing a single lot – a small 1970s beach house upgraded to contemporary performance standards, and a new two storey house positioned behind that faces north, for maximum passive solar design benefits.

The new house is designed to be secondary to the original much-loved and relaxed-feeling beach house, and the low-key nature of the original house is embraced in the new.

Openings are positioned to admit winter sun and cooling summer breezes, connect with the street at ground level, and extend views out into the landscape from the first floor, with views of Westernport and the local bush reserve.

The two houses are linked by a semi-enclosed carport entry with a translucent roof – the perfect space to drop surfboards and wetsuits on the way in from the beach; and a wedge-shaped courtyard deck – the perfect place to gather in the sun under the canopy of the trees.
